I was housemanager, awhile back now, on the 13th of october to the 18th with none other than Stephen. He has no real experience in cooking or cleaning, but that was ok. We made it through the week, he usually made bread, I made supper, he cleaned most of the house one day, I'd clean the nastiest bathroom. It was pretty fair considering he doesn't like cooking. But he browned taco meat and for that I am so proud of him. Our project leader also had his 48 hours that week, his break from us (he needs it) and he was doubtful that we could manage. We shoved it back in his face and managed just fine. Shopping for 11 people is a bum face. I could hardly push the cart and that didn't even include the vegetables that we bought at the outdoor market (Marcher Jean Talon) My next week of housemanaging is the first week of december with Nicole. She can cook and clean as well as me, if not better. It is going to be freaking sweet! The only downside, well there were 2, was that our project leader (he will be known as PL from now on...save typing time) criticised the smallest of things. And he's very concerned with bad milk products and undercooked meat, to the point of annoyance. We have lost so much yummy food that was left out of the fridge for more than 2 hours. This has never concerned me, and it still doesn't. All that food in the garbage annoys me. Oh well. We can't blame him, he was an only child. The second thing is filling out housemanager reports. They want to know EVERYTHING we did that week. It'S ridiculous and time consuming. That too, I am annoyed with, but at least I don't have to do everyweek, only the weeks I'm housemanager.
Work is going fine, except the've run out of things for me to do. It gets boring, but I always find something to do. Like right now I'm making signs for parking. Yay...parking signs. I only have 20 more minutes to fill.
Talk to you later!

Under the Big Top
During our first week here, our Project Leader took us to La Vie (Life) presented by Les Sept Doigts de la Main (The Seven Fingers of the Hand). It was spectacular. It is a play with circus elements and it had a live DJ. The story was about Pergatory and what happens after you die and before you either go to Heaven or Hell. It was all about this one man figuring out why he was dead and how he died. So in his quest to figure this out we find out the stories of all the other characters, and get to see their Circus act to match. There was lots of trapezery, the art trapezing, trapeze artistery? In any case, it was amazing. And that was the night I found out I wasn't in Ontario anymore. There was a scene where a very lonely woman sang a song titled Everybodies Fucking but Me. And after that gracious song, there comes the scene with the metal detectors in an airport (the whole pergatory theme was that it was an airplane...she was a flight attendant) and the new guy kept settin git off. So she told him to remove and article of clothing each time until he was standing on stage in his underwear. By this time the ring master came on with the hand held metal detector and swept over his body. The thing that kept setting it off was a nail in his nose. A really LONG nail in his nose. But after that he did the rest of the show in his underwear, that is until during a dance someone pulled them down. Yeah. The audiance saw everything. Twice because after he covered up, they uncovered him once again. Definitly not in Ontario anymore. But it was funny anyways. Lots of sexual jokes. Lots of funny sexual jokes.
Anyways...I have a housemanagers report to fill out. My next post will be to tell you about my time taking care of the house. Cooking and cleaning for 11...fun.

My Workplace
So for the past (HOLY COW!) month I have been working at CFI, Carrefour Familiale Intermède, in their day-care dealio-thinger and their second hand shop. I prefer the second hand shop because I have the darndest time discipling the children. The reason: they don't understand English and I don't know how to say stop that in a nice way. I end up saying Les Gars (translated means Boys...) and then I lose my words. In the second hand shop I help people with prices and take their money. It's pretty simple.
So that's on Monday Tuesdays. On Wednesdays Thursdays Fridays I work at Virage, a support group for people undergoing cancer treatments. There I loan out wigs, figure out the free parking, schedule massages and yoga and workshops and stuff enveloppes. And one of my supervisors found out recently that I am very good at photocopying so I am the honorary photocopier. That's right. I think my nametag should say:
Caitlyn Weir
Katimavik Volunteer
Photocopier Extraordinaire
I wish it did. It just says CAITLYN WEIR BÉNÈVOLAT. (volunteer)
This placement wasn't my first, or second choice. It wasn't even my third. I would say it wasn't my fourth but I didn't have to think that far behind. I definitly didn't expect it, I can tell you that much. But I don't hate it. That'S the main thing. There are parts that are very satisfying. I've seen 2 women leave Virage with smiles and beautiful wigs, that looked better than their real hair. That was the best moment for me, for now at least.
Also, this kind of falls under this catagory. Virage had a Gala, as they do every year, but this year they happened upon 2 extra tickets. The result: LyLy and I got to attend the Gala. They had a five course meal, a silent auction with pieces starting at 1 000$ and an old fashioned auction with the person yelling out numbers with items that started at around 2 or 3 thousand dollars. I was culture shocked. And to top it all off, there was a man at our table that has the really cool mustache that curls up. He made me smile.
Oh, and you know what? Here in Quebec, they do the double kiss thing on the cheek. I first encountered it at the Gala and the first person that extended this gesture was the man with the funny mustache. And since then it has happened a gazillion times! Ok, slight exageration, nut it feels like it has happened a lot. Most recent 2 hours ago. I need a class on the Double Cheek Kiss etiquette. N'est pas?
PS- I'm tired of speaking French...I want an Anglophone!

My group
The first thing I should tell you is about is my group.
Heavenly, known to us as LyLy, is from Gatineau, QB. She has a hard time understanding and speaking English, so sometimes she says some pretty ridiculous things. She is fun to have around and is my work buddy for this first a Trimester and she dresses somewhat emo/goth. But we love her to bits so we don't care.
Brigitte, is from somewhere near Quebec City, QB. She speaks English very well and is also very cool to hang out with. She's very down to earth and a good person to talk to. She helps me with my french and makes sure I know how to pronounce the swear words I might need.
Jean-Sol is from Quebec City. His English is also very good so he and I talk in both French and English and have some secret French jokes that go over the other Anglophones' heads. He and I make up the Second Language coomittee for this Trimester and have to organise some French activities.
Courtney is from near Edmonton, AB. She is the hippie of the house and is totally nice. I don't think she has a mean bone in her body. We talk about her trip to the Netherlands and how things are going in the house and ways to improve them. We are constantly laughing and hug attacking eachother.
Jamie, from Toronto, ON, is very opinionated, which is what I love most about her. She voices her opinions in a way that respects others while still getting her point across. She and I talk a lot about Marineland (mostly just singing the theme song...) and compare Montreal to Toronto. We bonded quite fast and she and I are tight.
Nicole...my ROOMY! She hails from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (I spelt that just to show you I can...impressive, eh?) We have so much in common from our time spent in the Prairies to the way we were raised. She has been there for me during the whole time. We have so many discussions and stories to tell eachother...she's just amazing. We are also we tight.
Alex is from Vancouver, BC (Surrey? Suray? Suree? I don't know how to spell it. Bbut I know it sounds like Sir-eee) His brain comes up with so many ideas that his mouth can't keep up. In other words he's very random. But he is also Philisophocal and can make a whole room of strangers laugh in less than 10 minutes. He keeps the house full of smiles. Everyone loves Alex.
Stephen is from Grand Bay, NB. He is pretty awesome. We are housemanagers right now and doing an amazing job. I'm trying to teach him how to cook, but you know some boys. He's great to hang out with and talk to and loves curd cheese.
Troy is from North Bay, ON and is socially awkward, which goes fine in our household considering we have a goth, a jock, a hippie, a clown, a farm-kid, a city-kid and me, a camp counsellor. He is one of a kind. And he loves my cooking! Yay! And I didn't even need to brain wash him. :D
We had another participant, but she, unfortunately, dropped out because the program wasn't right for her. We miss her, but if she hadn't dropped out, I wouldn't have switched rooms and would have never gotten to know Nicole the way I did. I found the silver lining.

Many Apologies
Okay, I am so sorry for not posting in a while, but it hasn't felt like it to me. I still can't believe that I will have been away from home for a whole month on Friday...Yup, that's right. It's my month-aversary with Katimavik. So much has happened since I've typed last. So I'll try to cover everything. In short posts to follow. I should really be posting a little at a time anyway. I'll do my best to start that habit, but I can't make any promises.

The Flight and Bus Ride to Mass-O
So once I abandonned my family on the other side of the impassable emtal detector machine, I waved some more and made my way to my gate. It was not that hard since The London International Airport has only 4 gates, all within a stones throw, nevermind, a stones toss away from eachother. I went about trying to find a song to listen to. It turned out to Montreal Calling by Moblie. How appropriate. And as the song started they called my flight to board. Sweet deal. No less than 10 minutes in the airport and I`m already boarding my plane. So I make my way out to the plane and low and behole my Air Canada Jazz flight is smaller than my dads tractor-trailer. This should be interesting.
I walked up the stairs to the mini-plane, and found my seat. It was not that hard considering there were only 2 rows of 2. Perfect. I had this lady who looked to be Hindu, or Arabic sit beside and I was like cool someone to talk to! Then she switched to an empty seat to sit next to her friend. What a poo face. So I sat alone looking at the amzing view because it was a cloudless day. I have pictures. I just have to figure out how to get them on here. They might be coming at a later date.
So, you cannot have listening devices on while the sircraft is taking off and landing, and it seemed rude to be distracted while I was being told how to save myself in case of emergency, so I did not end up using my ipod at all. Pooey. And to boot as soon as I was served water, the seatbelt sign came on...we were landing. Just great I had to down my water or else waste perfect clarity, which is very much unlike me.
The scariest part of my flight was the fact that the plane shook violently everytime we entered clouds, which became frequent in the Toronto area. I thought I would die, but I had complete confidence in the pilot and we made it through. Thank you Air Canada pilot whom I do not know.
When I got to the Toronto airport I went up and escalator around a corner, then another and walked a long way to my next gate, which thankfully was in the same place that my other plane landed. Youpi! I waited there for about 40 minutes, went to the bathroom to pee and fix my hair which was not agreeing with my earlier plans of no frizz. So, ponytail in place, I waited some more and then boarded a larger plane with 3 rows of 2-3-2. I had an aisle seat on this flight (Did I mention that my seat on my earlier flight was a window seat...cause I meant to. It was pretty sweet.) I got stuck next to a non-talker\sleeper so no conversation there either. Oh man. So I eventually fell asleep. And woke up when they were serving pretzels and beverages. I had another water and ate my pretzels gratefully forgetting about my snacks that were occupying my purse. And again shortly after that we were landing. When in Montreal I waited ever so un-patiently for my bags and took them over to Marie-Eve and Sarah, the Katimavik greeters. Hooray! I was there!
A short phone call to my dad saying that I was alive (mostly for my moms sake) and then the wait. I hate waiting so it was the longest day of my life. My plane was early so I got to the airport at maybe 5 ish...not actually sure, and we had to wait until 7:00 for the rest of the people to arrive. And then, one the planes was late so we waited for them, said goodbye to the other cluster that was leaving Mass-Orientation, and waited some more. When our bus finally arrived at like 8:30 we gladly climbed aboard. I sat beside Stephan, from Paisley ON and had convos with the two people in front of me, Rebekah from New Brunswick and Alex, who I mentioned in earlier posts as the clown. Yup I was right. We talked about what kind of parties we could have. He said a cranberry party would be fun, where you only drink cranberry juice. Nope, we laughed and decided that it was so boring. And laughed some more. Then we said that it would be really mean if you filled the Sahara desert with something (I cannot reme, ebr which sucks ) and then make it so that all you have to walk to is a museum which costs 100 dollars admission. When you get inside you find out that its a museum of corn. Then the conversation turned into how you would build a plane of corn and eat it if you have to. And on top of that when we got to Mass-O, we were talked to until 10:30 and did not get supper. :( Then the people running it found out and brought out bread and peanut butter. Yay! :) Peanut butter!
That is pretty much for that topic. Again people want to use the computer so I have to wrap up. Love you and miss you!

The Preflight.
So, I am going to have to take this one piece at a time because of limited computer time, but here is exactly what went down on the 17th of september.
So I woke up at 6:00 after staying up late with my sister. Not a good way to start a trip. But, on the upside I was wired to the point that I could not stop moving for the fear of exploding. We then left to go to the London International Airport to check my bag. That went freakishly smooth, partially because of no line which is due to the mini-ness of the airport. After that was dealt with (10 minutes...it has to be a record.) Me, my dad and my mom went to the Malibu to meet up with my aunt who was all like «I want to be there!» so we met her there for lunch before my flight. I had a kids meal chicken fingers and fries and felt like vimiting. Not because it was gross but because of nerves, hence why it was suggested I take a gravol. When we arrived at the airport, we stood around, my mom and aunt made some sexual jokes, I looked at my dad awkwardly, then I decided it would be a good time to leave and go through customs...where my family could not get me. ;D Kiding, it was almost time for my flight so I went through customs but not before I hugged and kissed my mom, dad and aunt, and repeatedly got my butt grabbed by my aunt which was fine. Its just my aunt. Thats who she is.
So now the waiting begins. I get my ipod and they call my plane to board. Yes! This is where the trouble begins.
To be continued...(other people need the computer...cliff hanger ending!)

No Time To Blog!
Okay, so everyone is waiting for the computer so I don't have much time but I just wanted to say that I am alive and in one piece. I am having a blast, practicing french, loving life and missing home. I love you all. This would be so much more fun with you all here. The Orientation was cool and I've met so many new people from all over Canada. Again I miss you and will find time to type without a line up yelling at me.

Waiting
I have been wide awake since 6:00 this morning. My room is spotless. My bags are packed. I showered last night...finally! I am dressed. I've eaten breakfast. Now I must play the waiting game. Oh boy do I hate this game. I have nothing to do. And so the rambling begins.
The weather right now is nice. Peaceful you could say. Last night the meteorologists said there were chances of thundershowers, but now they changed it and it looks like good flying weather. I've said goodbye to Melissa already because she had an early class. I love you Melissa and I'm going to miss you very much. I made a beutiful necklace with my Aunt yesterday. I'm wearing as I type. I'm starting to get very hot because I am wearing as many clothes as I can to avoid packing them. Maybe not one of my better ideas. The lack of sleep is starting to catch up with me, but I dont want to go to bed. Hmmm, the conundrums of my life.
Perhaps I will go and play the Wii, or maybe Guitar Hero. I haven't decided. Maybe both because I will be video gameless for 9 months. Oh dear. That won't be fun. I should pack some playing cards.
I'm done typing. It's taking too much effort to lift my fingers. Goodbye. I love you all.
PS- Happy Birthday Machala! Have a great one! And try not to drive Linda crazy.

Time to Pull Out the Brown Paper Bag
So, right now I have this massive headache; partially because of my new totally amazing glasses, and partially because I'm leaving tomorrow! I am so tired, but I can't sleep. I haven't eaten an actual 3 square meals a day in weeks and I have failed to shower for about 4 days now. I am not a pretty sight.
My bags are all packed and sitting next to me. I have my tickets and tags. I am ready to go.
I won't be able to post until sometime next week because of the Katimavik orientation camp, which is basically summer camp for teens, and will not have access to a flushing toilet let alone a computer. Speaking of toilets, I really have to pee. I may post tomorrow, just to say how much I love you all and will miss you, but if not :
I love you! I am going to miss you so much!
Love Caitlyn

6 More Days!
So I just looked at my watch and realized I haven't had supper and it's 6:40. Then I looked to where the 3 is on normal watches and OMG! It's the 11th! (My watch has the day of the month instead of a 3, go figure.) There is only 6 more days until I fly to Montréal and meet the other people that I'm going to live with for the next 9 months. That's pretty scary. What's even scarier is that I have my travel information, I've taken care of oall of my appointments, save my health card thing tomorrow, and I'm practically all packed. In short, I'm ready to go.
My sister is the best sister in the whole world. She went out and bought me a digital camera for my trip. It's a blue Fuji film and it is amazing and I love her so much. She has got to be the most amazing sister ever created. Thanks sis! I'll make this up to you somehow.
Furthermore, I have found some of the people from my group. There is Alex from Vancouver BC. He sounds like a class clown. And Stephen from Grand Bay NB. I can't really tell what he's like. And finally, Courtney from Edmonton AB. She just contacted me today so I'm not sure what she's like.
I can't wait! My flight leaves London at 2:00 and I have a connecting flight in Toronto to arrive safely in Montréal at about 5:00 ish, I think. Eek! 6 more days!

Before the Adventure Begins...
Hey there party peoples!
In case you haven't heard, which is quite possible because I haven't spread the news yet, I got accepted into a program called Katimavik where I will be travelling to 3 destinations accross Canada to help people in that community. I will be beginning my journey in Montréal Québec, followed by a cold winter in Summerside PEI and fianlly a chilly spring in Stonewall Manitoba. My journey begins on the 17th of September, which is approaching fast, and will end, if nothing goes wrong, on the 17th of June. I will be updating this as often as I can as well as sending out emails. Pictures will be posted on here (if I figure out how...) so you won't forget about me. :)
It's not quite saving puppies in Africa, but it's a close start. ;)
PS- Please feel free to email me...I want to know about what I'm missing.
